Deltec Bank, Bahamas knowledge series-What Is Quantum Computing?

Quantum computing could inspire the development of new technologies and breakthroughs in a wide variety of fields and industries. This technology could help us to understand more about the scientific world, help doctors to find an accurate diagnosis quickly, or work to create new medicines that would save lives.

It can help us in the financial world as well, allowing us to develop new investment and saving strategies that can create more wealth for everyone.

What is quantum computing? How can we achieve these results?

These are the facts you will want to know.

Quantum Computing Uses Entanglement and Superposition

Entanglement at the quantum level allows an information exchange to occur between two particles which are at a distance from each other. Superposition refers to the uncertainty of those particles being in several states at once, allowing data to move from particle-to-particle even though they are in several locations simultaneously.

The world already benefits from the outcomes of classical computing principles each day. Now that technology has advanced enough to use these quantum particles, which are called “qubits,” then it becomes possible to store and manipulation more data than ever before.

There are also speed benefits to consider with entanglement and superposition. The intensity of data movement at the quantum level involves the creation of qubits, management of the heat that this action creates, and how to extract the information in useful ways.

The principle can be summed up like this: all entangled states are special instances of superimposed ones, but not every superposition becomes an entangled state.

Take a Look Inside of a Quantum Computer

A quantum computer must be kept at frigid temperatures, close to absolute zero, because any heat could disrupt the information transfer. That means the dilution refrigerator which stores this technology requires more than 2,000 components to operate by itself.

Two amplifying stages are cooled to a temperature of 4° Kelvin, making it possible for qubit creation. Input microwave lines and superconducting coaxial lines help to protect the information from thermal noise while reducing degradation in the transfer. Then cryogenic isolators allow the qubit signals to push forward.

The quantum processor sits inside of a shield that protects it from electromagnetic radiation. This part of the design helps to preserve the quality of the equipment. Then the mixing chamber, which is at the lowest part of the refrigeration unit, brings the components and processor to a temperature of just 15 mK.

That means we must operate a quantum computer in an environment that is colder than outer space.

What Does This Technology Mean for Us?

The number of quantum states in any molecule is astoundingly massive. If we were to try to use conventional computer technologies to analyze this information, it would take more than the memory and power of every unit on our planet in the past, present, and future to attempt to model it.

Quantum computing allows us to advance to that next level. It will help us to understand more about the microscopic world that we cannot see with our eyes, which can then let us push the envelope forward on our knowledge of almost everything in the scientific and business world.
