“One Jin of lacquer requires a hundred miles and a thousand cuts,” meaning that to obtain 500g of pure natural lacquer, one needs to walk 50km and make 1,000 cuts on the lacquer trees.

When lacquer is transformed into lacquerware, it must go through four basic processes: puttying, scraping, painting and polishing.This is just the foundation.

The main manufacturing techniques of Yangzhou lacquerware include ten major categories, including Dianluo, lacquer engraving, carved lacquer inlaid with jade, carved lacquer, plane abrasion and mother-of-pearl inlay, colored drawing (carved and fill-in), bone and stone inlay, lacquer inlaid with multi-precious objects, Nanmu carved lacquer sand inkstone, and polished lacquer paintings.

“Dianluo” is the unique craftsmanship of Yangzhou lacquerware. It involves cutting colorful shells into thin, cicada-wing-like slices, selecting the appropriate colors according to the pattern, and hand-inlaying them into the lacquer surface.
