After spending more than 27 years serving and protecting his community through law enforcement, Peter Grimyser has found a new way to continue making a difference.
The retired Detective/Sergeant now volunteers with the American Red Cross, carrying forward the same commitment to helping others that defined his professional career.
Grimyser retired from the University of Wisconsin–Madison Police Department after nearly three decades of service, where he led investigations, managed critical incidents, and worked alongside colleagues, university leaders, and outside agencies to address complex public safety challenges. While the setting has changed, his dedication to helping others has not.
Today, his volunteer work allows him to remain connected to the values that guided him throughout his career: service, responsibility, and supporting people during difficult moments.
A Lifetime Built Around Service
For Grimyser, the transition into retirement was never about stepping away from serving others. Instead, it became an opportunity to continue contributing in a different capacity.
Throughout his career, he learned that meaningful service often happens behind the scenes. Whether coordinating a complex investigation, responding to an emergency, or helping someone through a stressful situation, success depended on preparation, communication, and teamwork. Those same qualities continue to shape his approach as a volunteer with the American Red Cross.
“Helping people has always been the most rewarding part of my work,” said Grimyser. “Retirement gave me the chance to continue serving my community from a different perspective. Volunteering allows me to stay involved, meet people from all walks of life, and support others when they need it most.”
Grimyser believes the skills developed through years of public service remain valuable long after a career ends. Staying calm under pressure, listening carefully, and working together toward a common goal are lessons that apply far beyond law enforcement.
Encouraging Others to Stay Involved
As more experienced professionals enter retirement, Grimyser hopes they will consider sharing their time and knowledge through volunteer service. He believes communities benefit when people continue contributing the experience they’ve gained throughout their careers.
“Every career teaches you something that can help someone else,” Grimyser said. “Retirement doesn’t have to mean stepping away from making a difference. Sometimes it simply means finding a new way to use your experience.”
Volunteer organizations also create opportunities to build new relationships and continue learning. Grimyser says working alongside people from different backgrounds has been one of the most rewarding parts of this chapter of his life.
While his daily responsibilities look different from what they once did, the purpose remains familiar. He continues to look for opportunities to support others, strengthen his community, and encourage a spirit of service that extends well beyond any single career.
Looking ahead, Grimyser plans to remain active through volunteer work while continuing to share the lessons he gained over nearly three decades in public safety. He believes that integrity, teamwork, and a willingness to help others never go out of style, regardless of where someone is in their career.
