Fitness Refined Releases 2026 Report on Why Fitness App Users Quit
Mobile apps lose 90% of active users within 30 days of install.
New analysis finds health and fitness apps retain just 3% of users by Day 30, highlighting the importance of early activation and simple workout experiences.

Fitness Refined has released its new report, Fitness App Retention Statistics 2026: Why Users Quit and What Keeps Them, compiling the latest available benchmarks on app engagement, churn, activation, and the fitness app market.

The report finds that health and fitness apps face a steep early retention challenge. A reported 3% of users remain active 30 days after installation.

The findings point to a familiar problem for fitness app companies: downloads may be available, but maintaining user interest after the initial burst of motivation is far more difficult.

Key findings from the report include:

  • Health and fitness apps had a reported 3% Day-30 retention rate.

  • Health and fitness app activation fell from 26% on Day 1 to 10% by Day 28.

  • The average mobile app loses 77% of daily active users within three days of installation.

  • Annual health and fitness subscriptions had a reported 33% retention rate.

  • The global fitness app market is estimated at $13.9 billion in 2026.

The report also examines common reasons users abandon health and fitness apps, including time-consuming manual entry, complex onboarding, technical issues, generic content, unclear value, and workout plans that do not fit real schedules.

According to David Zhong, CPT and author of the report, early user experience is where fitness apps can make the biggest difference.

David Zhong said that users should not have to complete a long setup process before seeing useful value. The most effective fitness apps help people complete a meaningful first workout quickly, understand what to do next, and see progress that makes returning feel worthwhile.

The report notes that retention is not one universal metric. Day 30 install retention, daily active user decline, activation rates, monthly activity, and annual subscription retention measure different parts of the customer journey. Fitness Refined encourages product teams to use consistent cohort tracking and compare their performance over time instead of relying on a single industry average.
