Assist Group targets 30,000 lives as it calls for greater focus on workforce health

Sydney, Australia – September 4th, 2026 – Assist Group has set what it calls its Big Audacious Noble Goal, or BANG, to save approximately 30,000 people from serious injury or ill health through its medical testing and health screening services by 2030. The company describes it as a stretch target to measure its social capital impact, and says it has already helped protect approximately 19,000 people on the way there.

Founded in 1986, Assist Group provides occupational health services to Australian employers, including medical testing, health screening and workplace health monitoring.

‘We want to look out for employee health and wellness and at the same time, help companies to boost their productivity,’ said James Aldridge, CEO of Assist Group. ‘This ultimately reduces costs linked to workplace and non-workplace illness, and a potential reduction in workers’ compensation premiums.’

The scale of the challenge is significant. The International Labour Organization estimates around 395 million workers worldwide sustain a non-fatal work injury each year, at a cost of almost 4% of global GDP. In Australia, Safe Work Australia recorded 146,700 serious workers’ compensation claims in 2023-24, with body stressing the most common cause at 50,600 claims, or 34.5%. For those claims, the median payment was $19,400 and the median time lost 9.2 weeks.

Aldridge argues that health and human resources belong together, and that a workplace injury costs far more than the compensation claim alone once lost productivity, replacement staffing, training and higher premiums are counted.

‘By implementing occupational health and safety policies, medical testing, and training, employers can demonstrate to their stakeholders that their business is socially responsible, while meeting their obligations under relevant WHS legislation and supporting a range of corporate goals and objectives,’ Aldridge said.
