MIAMI, Fla. – Plastic surgery practices with the strongest independently measured digital-authority signals appeared 5.6 times more often in Google’s organic top 10 than practices with the weakest authority signals, according to a new nationwide analysis released by Plastic SEO.
The 2026 U.S. Plastic Surgery Digital Visibility Study examined 327 plastic surgery practices across 24 major metropolitan markets between January 5 and May 29, 2026.
To avoid defining successful practices by their Google rankings, researchers first created an independent Digital Authority Score based on five categories:
Patient-review activity
Physician-led procedure content
Relevant third-party recognition
Local business prominence
Website performance and usability
Google search visibility was not included in the authority score.
After scoring the practices, Plastic SEO compared the highest authority quartile with the lowest authority quartile. Practices in the top quartile appeared in Google’s organic top 10 an average of 5.6 times as often for the same set of non-branded, procedure-and-location searches.
“This study was designed to examine what highly visible plastic surgery practices have in common without using rankings to define authority,” said Jason, Marketing Director of Plastic SEO. “The findings suggest that practices become more competitive when their expertise, reputation, local presence, and website quality are consistently demonstrated across the web.”
Five Characteristics Distinguished Top-Authority Practices
Plastic SEO evaluated each practice using standardized criteria that were separate from its Google ranking performance.
1. More Consistent Patient-Review Activity
Top-authority practices received 2.4 times as many new patient reviews during the previous 12 months as practices in the lowest authority quartile.
Researchers measured:
New-review volume
Review recency
Average rating
Review frequency throughout the year
Practice responses to reviews
The study did not treat review quantity alone as proof of quality. Instead, it evaluated whether practices maintained a consistent and credible pattern of patient feedback.
2. More Complete Physician-Led Procedure Content
Top-authority practices earned a 58% higher procedure-content completeness score.
The score measured whether procedure pages included:
Named physician authorship or medical review
Candidacy requirements
Expected benefits and limitations
Recovery information
Potential risks
Surgical techniques
Frequently asked questions
Surgeon credentials and experience
Original photographs or educational media
“The strongest pages did not simply contain more words,” Jason said. “They gave prospective patients clearer, more complete information and identified the qualified physician responsible for the medical content.”
3. Greater Recognition From Relevant Third Parties
Practices in the top authority quartile received 3.7 times as many relevant mentions and links from reputable third-party websites.
Qualifying sources included:
Medical publications
Professional associations
Recognized healthcare directories
Local and national news outlets
Universities and hospitals
Established industry publications
Low-quality, irrelevant, paid, or automatically generated links were excluded from the calculation.
4. More Frequent Google Local Three-Pack Visibility
Top-authority practices appeared in Google’s local three-pack 2.9 times as often as practices in the lowest authority quartile.
Researchers evaluated the same non-branded procedure-and-location searches across all participating markets and recorded whether each practice appeared in the three-result local map section.
Top-authority practices were also more likely to maintain:
Complete business profiles
Accurate contact and location information
Relevant service categories
Current photographs
Consistent review activity
Strong website-to-location connections
5. Faster Mobile Page Performance
The median mobile Largest Contentful Paint, a measurement of how quickly the primary page content becomes visible, was 34% faster among top-authority practices.
The highest-scoring websites also demonstrated fewer severe technical problems, including:
Broken pages
Duplicate content
Poor mobile layouts
Missing page information
Confusing website architecture
Slow procedure-page loading
Authority Was Associated With Visibility, Not Proven to Cause It
Plastic SEO emphasized that the study identified relationships between digital-authority characteristics and search performance.
Because the research was observational, it does not prove that any individual factor directly caused a practice to rank higher.
“No single review, article, website update, or technical improvement guarantees better rankings,” Jason said. “The strongest practices demonstrated a combination of expertise, reputation, relevance, technical quality, and independent recognition.”
Client Results Were Evaluated Separately
Plastic SEO compared the national findings with documented results from one client campaign. The client’s data was analyzed separately and did not influence the national study’s practice scores or findings.
Over a 12-month campaign, recorded:
A 168% increase in appearances within Google’s organic top 10
121% growth in non-branded organic traffic
A 46% increase in qualified consultation inquiries
37 new first-page procedure rankings
A 52% improvement in local search visibility
83 additional qualified consultation inquiries
29 attributed procedures
Approximately $1.26 million in collected treatment revenue
The attributed procedures produced an average of approximately $43,400 in collected revenue per procedure.
Revenue attribution was based on lead-source tracking, consultation records, completed procedures, and collected treatment revenue during the measurement period.
The campaign included:
Technical website improvements
Physician-reviewed procedure content
Local search optimization
Reputation strategy
Digital public relations
Conversion improvements
Lead and revenue attribution
“Before working with Plastic SEO, our digital presence did not accurately represent the experience and quality of our practice,” said Dr. Valery Marquez, MD, FACS, Medical Director at Marquez Plastic Surgery. “The strategy improved our visibility and helped us attract more qualified prospective patients for the procedures we wanted to grow.”
Study Methodology
The study examined 327 independently selected plastic surgery practices across 24 major U.S. metropolitan markets.
Researchers evaluated a standardized group of non-branded searches combining procedures and locations, including searches comparable to:
Rhinoplasty surgeon in Los Angeles
Facelift specialist in New York City
Breast augmentation in Miami
Mommy makeover surgeon in Miami
Liposuction specialist in Houston
Paid advertisements and branded searches containing a surgeon’s or practice’s name were excluded.
The primary visibility metric measured how frequently each practice appeared within Google’s organic top 10.
Google local three-pack appearances were recorded and analyzed separately.
The Digital Authority Score excluded Google ranking data and was based on:
Review activity
Procedure-content completeness
Mobile website performance
Practices were then divided into quartiles according to their independent authority scores.
The reported 5.6× difference compares the average organic top-10 appearance rate of practices in the highest authority quartile with those in the lowest authority quartile.
Plastic SEO did not receive payment from practices included in the national analysis.
The complete report includes:
Search queries evaluated
Markets included
Scoring criteria
Data-collection dates
Statistical calculations
Study limitations
Potential conflicts of interest
An Annual Benchmark for Plastic Surgery Practices
Plastic SEO plans to update the study annually and publish additional reports covering individual procedures and competitive markets.
Future analyses are expected to examine:
Rhinoplasty
Facelift surgery
Breast augmentation
Mommy makeover
Liposuction and body contouring
Male plastic surgery
“Our goal is to give plastic surgeons a transparent benchmark they can use to understand their digital position,” Jason said. “Practices should be able to see where meaningful gaps exist and which improvements deserve priority.”
